Adult/Kids Informative Wall Plaque

I wasn't well today, so didnt go to CURA100. Instead, I typed up text for the adult and kids wall plaque.

The question for each bit of info is in the centre row: the adult info is in top row and kids info in bottom row.

This came from Will's idea of having two different levels of text - higher for adults and lower for kids. This would allow for more detailed informative text for an adult audience and an easier to understand piece of text for younger children which didnt focus on the theme of death. We wanted to be sensitive to a young child's level of understanding and didnt want it to be a frightening experience for them or have to deal with angry/upset parents.

When we visited the museum last week, Will took photos of wall plaque which echoed his idea. We propose to photoshop the text into the museum photos to give a visual realistic example.

Danby darling, if you're happy with the text, you can copy and paste it into new doc, make it look a bit more interesting if you like - with pics, change of font etc and photoshop it into museum pic, as your'e far more knowledgeable in that department than I, cheers m'dear ;)

Testing out Day Of The Dead recipes

Skull Shaped Lemon and Poppy Seed Cookies
Although not a traditional item for placing on the alter it is a fun and easy way to experience a bit of the Day Of The Dead in your own home and they are fun to decorate.
Recipe
Ingredients:
  • 4 tbsp lemon juice
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 230g butter
  • 460g plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 230g sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds

To decorate:

These can be decorated any way you choose. We used chocolate beans, marshmallows, poppy seeds, flaked almonds and edible gold spray paint.

  1. Preheat oven to 190C
  2. Bring lemon juice to simmer until reduced by half. Add half of the butter and stir until it has melted. Remove from heat.
  3. In a bowl, cream together the rest of the butter with the sugar. Add the egg and stir. Then add the lemon butter mix and stir for three minutes until the mixture becomes pale.
  4. Mix in vanilla extract and lemon zest.
  5. Add in the rest of the ingredients and mix together.
  6. Roll the mix into balls, then flatten them and shape them into skull shapes.
  7. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes
  8. Leave to cool and then decorate.

Pan De Muerto Recipe Card

We decided to produce recipe cards that would be available at the museum during the exhibition because we couldnt provide real food due to health and safety. This is the one I created for Day Of The Dead bread. It is a different recipe that the one we used when making it ourselves because it was to complex a recipe for kids to be able to do easily and ingredients like orange blossom water are hard to come by. Complex recipes are off putting and we want the recipe cards to be as assessable as possible so that familys can experience The Day Of The Dead in their own homes. Learning through a practicle family activity like baking could help children learn about The Day Of The Dead in their own homes. The recipe card is made to scale to be printed onto A4 paper but the edges of it cannot be seen in this post because the recipe card uses white paper and the background of the blog post is white.

Labels Linking Existing Museum Displays to Day of the Dead Exhibition

Hey, these are the labels I've come up with to link some of the existing museum pieces to our exhibition. The lefthand column is just for reference, showing where label would be situated. I haven't double-checked it yet for typos etc and I've missed a reference but you get the gist.

CURA 100 Group Meeting 01/11/2011

Group met outside Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery at 2pm with a view to taking photographs of the museum space.

Will took photographs to be used for the following ideas:

Create DoD childrens treasure hunt to encourage children to see the whole of the museum and not just the exhibition

Create photographic representations of how the exhibition will look (with ragdoll, banners etc) using Photoshop

Create labels to link some of the existing museum displays to the DoD exhibition

To establish the museum display space available

These points were discussed with Adam who was present at the museum on our arrival.

On returning to the college, we designated tasks as follows:

Charlie – treasure hunt activity sheet

Siobhan – photoshop banners, floorplan and create recipe cards

Will – photoshop ragdoll and museum interior

Hels – labels to link museum displays to DoD - also Will and Hels to work on adult/children info plaques

Also, we discussed making card pockets for the activity sheets. These could then be issued as activity packs for visiting children.

James read over first draft of proposal while we updated him on our progress – all good!

Please feel free to add, amend etc proposal or tell me what you want added etc and I’ll put it in, cheers chums!
